A good quality sound system is just as important as any other of the aforementioned DJ equipment and involves an arrangement of microphones, electronic signal processors, amplifiers and loudspeakers to broadcast to the audience. In all cases a sound system is designed to reinforce sound and make it louder and distribute over a larger distance and audience. The sound system is connected to the mixer we previously looked at to broadcast out the mixes done by the DJ. System components are varied and diverse and need expert assembly. Some of these components include input transducers, signal processors, equalizers, compressors and limiters, noise gates and power amplifiers. These are the core components and then there are the loudspeakers themselves also.
A sound system to be used as a piece of DJ equipment must be optimized for prerecorded music played by DJ’s. If it is not then it will not provide the appropriate sounds for the audience. A lot is dependent on the venue size (is it open air or enclosed?) and the type of music that is going to be played by the DJ’s. Live venues can often cause problems with sound system equipment due to heat and humidity and often their will be specialists monitoring the equipment to ensure that nothing goes wrong at any particularly large venue.
