djingDJ’s have come a long way since the first days of live radio music hall broadcasting and now there fame is equal to that of movie and music stars. In order to be a good DJ you must also have the right equipment for the job. The first of these is a sound medium.

Sound mediums today come in many forms depending on the type of other DJ equipment that you are using. The tradition DJ equipment up until relatively recently was the vinyl record. This analogue storage device consists of a flat disc with an inscribed modulated spiral groove which stats at the edge of the record and works it’s way in towards the center during the duration of the piece of music. Vinyl continue to be made today mostly for niche markets as they do have some negative qualities that can limit a DJ. The biggest limitation is size and weight. In order to have a varied set a DJ has to carry a large amount of vinyl with him.

Another medium that has soared in popularity in the past 20 years is the compact disc. As the name suggests, this overcomes the main flaw of vinyl. A CD is an optical digital storage device and DJ equipment adapted quickly to cater for using these alternate music sources as a means in their set.

The final and most modern of sound mediums used by a DJ in his equipment today are computer media files. These are music files stored in an mpeg format or similar that can be accessed through a laptop and stored by the millions in one single sound device.
